Saturday's Critters # 567

Welcome to Saturday's Critters! Hello and Happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

Aug 21-22, Hubby and I enjoyed a little getaway to Delaware, the main reason was birdwatching of course. What else?  I read on facebook that there were some Black-bellied Whistling Ducks hanging out on a little neighborhood pond in Clayton Delaware which is only minutes from my favorite Bombay Hook wildlife refuge. I have loved these cute ducks ever since Tex Girl and her blog Run*A*Ranch introduced them on her blog. I think my first sighting of these cute ducks was in Florida.

Click on images for larger views.

1. The Black-bellied Whistling Ducks seemed to have made this pond their home for the summer. They even had some ducklings, you can see in the top right image in the mosaic below.

2. A good sized group of Black-bellied Whistling ducks with some Canada Geese and a few Mallards.

3. The ducklings are growing fast but the adult Black-bellied Whistling duck is staying close by.

4. Other birds in the little pond were the Canada Geese, Mallards and a Great Blue Heron.

5. I believe these two ducks below are the American Black Ducks.

6. Another shot of my favorite Whistling Ducks with the Mallard and Canada Geese.

7. This Black-bellied Whistling Duck seems to be albe to sleep standing up.

8. Another cute Black-bellied Whistling Duck.

9. Another shot of the Black-bellied Whistling ducklings.

10. A Great Blue Heron just walking by!

I am linking up to Heidrun's Mosaic Monday  I hope you can stop by and visit Heidrun and check out the Mosaic Monday post.

Thanks to all my visitors and for your past and present comments. Stop back to see any replies to your comments. I appreciate everyone who loves and respects wildlife. Thank you for linking up a critter post.

I love ducks too. Luckily many wild ducks live around Waikiki. We see them flying, and on lawns and in the water features of our buildings too, including ducklings being born. So it's a very lucky thing. Have a beautiful weekend. Eileen, aloha, don't forget to vote

I've also seen the whistling ducks in Florida. I don't remember seeing them at Bombay Hook, but we've only been there once.

I think Blogger just buried my first comment...if not, ignore this one! It was admiring the views of the ducks and asking if they actually whistle? YAM xx

Good morning, dear Eileen. The feathered friends by the water are numerous. And I'm pleased that I've once again learned a lot about the different species. Isn't it fantastic what nature can achieve?

Thank you for sharing and for hosting. Wish you a wonderful week, greetings by Heidrun

Hello Eileen
The Whistling Ducks are very beautiful. It's strange that they can sleep and stand up. I like ducks!
Take care, and enjoy your weekend!

Interesting idea for a bird/duck to sleep standing! I need to go and see if the ducks are still by river Oker. Once I saw seagulls there (I am pretty sure) - can you explain what seagulls do 300 km / 186 miles away from the ocean?
This happened only once (that I saw them) and it is at least 10 years ago....
I´m wishing you a happy Saturday.

I find Whistling Ducks of any species exceptionally appealing. A couple of years ago a Black-bellied Whistling Duck put in an appearance here in Ontario and birders from near and far came to see it. It was quite a celebrity for a while.

Dear Eileen, the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are really beautiful birds. I don't think I've ever seen them anywhere before - if I have, I didn't recognize them. I'm very happy that you were able to see so many of them and their ducklings too! And it's great that you saw some other pretty birds. My favorite photo is under point 6 with the Whistling Ducks in the foreground, the Mallard on the left and the Canada Geese in the background 😊🥰😍.
Have a nice weekend!
All the best from Austria, Traude

I have never travelled for the main purpose of birding, I may need to consider doing that if I want to see species not common to my area. I had not heard of Whistling Ducks before! Thank You for opening my eyes to them!

I love your whistling ducks. They are distinctive looking and cute as well. Except that one who looks like she is preparing to defend her ducklings has temporarily shed her cuteness.

Thank you for hosting.
