Happy Memorial Day weekend! Remember and Honor! Be safe, this holiday weekend!

Another post of mish-mash images and dates, I am still behind sharing.

Click on images for better viewing.

1. April 1 in my backyard I was still seeing the Eastern Bluebirds. I hope they were using my birdhouse for their nest. Isn't he beautiful?

2. April 1st, our backyard Daffodils were looking pretty.

3. April 1st, my Merlin app was on while walking Miney on our local fire road. Below are some of the birds I heard on our walk.

4. Miney is great at climbing over the down trees on the trail.

5. April 4th, the Merlin app list of birds heard on our fire road walk at Prettyboy.

6. April 4th, Miney on our walk on the local Prettyboy fire road.

7. My flashback images from May 2019, looking out my window to see 3 Pileated Woodpeckers in my backyard.

From last year, March 2024 the Pileated Woodpecker was pecking away at a tree next to our yard. The male has the extra red stipe on it's cheek.

8. May 2019, flashback to a getaway to Shenandoah National Park, I saw this pretty Indigo Bunting sitting in a tree next to the overlook on Skyline Drive. The Indigo Bunting has a small bill compared to the Grosbeaks.

From May 2023, we see a lot of the Indigo Buntings and Blue Grosbeaks at the Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware. The Blue Grosbeak has a rust color on it's wings and a heavier beak.

I am linking up to Heidrun's Mosaic Monday  I hope you can stop by and visit Heidrun and check out the Mosaic Monday post.

I love all the blue colors in the birds you linked. Blue color in birds is very interesting as well as beautiful… here’s a quote from the Smithsonian:

“Red and yellow feathers get their color from actual pigments, called carotenoids, that are in the foods birds eat. Blue is different―no bird species can make blue from pigments. The color blue that we see on a bird is created by the way light waves interact with the feathers and their arrangement of protein molecules, called keratin. In other words, blue is a structural color. Different keratin structures reflect light in subtly different ways to produce different shades of what our eyes perceive as the color blue. A blue feather under ultraviolet light might look uniformly gray to human eyes.”

The Eastern Bluebird is a beauty - as are the Daffodils! Usually Braunschweig has them all over, too, not this year, though, so thank you for the sight!
I never knew... there is an App for anything, huh? Imagine back in the day having a heavy paper-book with you!
I hear a woodpecker in the city sometimes but no matter how long I wait... never see it! It´s in a mini park in the city, that it feels fine there is a miracle to me - can you explain?
Beautiful bird. And LOUD! The Indigo sure reminds me of... you know, the bird I never saw for real, despite it must´ve been right there!

Dear Eileen,
The Eastern Bluebird is an absolute jewel — such stunning plumage! πŸ’™✨ The vivid blue of the Indigo Buntings and Blue Grosbeaks is also a true feast for the eyes — what a joy it must be to spot them! The Pileated Woodpeckers are magnificent birds as well; we sometimes hear woodpeckers tapping in our nearby woods, but they’re such elusive little acrobats that I rarely catch a glimpse. That’s why I love using the Merlin app during walks, too — it’s such a delight to discover which birds are singing nearby, even when they stay hidden among the leaves. 🎢πŸͺΆ
Your daffodils are sunshine in flower form — so bright and uplifting! 🌼🌞
And please give sweet Miney a gentle pat from me — it was lovely to join you both for a virtual stroll. πŸΎπŸ’›
Wishing you many more wonderful bird sightings, a happy Memorial Day weekend and peaceful spring days!
Warm hugs, Traude πŸŒ·πŸ¦‹

Hello Eileen,
You have taken so many beautiful pictures. The Eastern Bluebird is very pretty. Miney is always so sweet. I have just started using the Merlin Bird ID app, and it is a great tool for identifying birds.
Take care, and have a nice weekend!

Jenn Jilks said...

Isn't that app great?! Even if it names the wrong bird, you can get closer to a good ID and look it up. It's really helped me.

Marie Smith said...

Love the birds of blue. I will have to start using that app for bird song id. I certainly can’t always id what I hear!

Our area is starting to become repopulated with bluebirds. I've only seen them a few times, but it feels like a blessed moment anytime I do. The woodpecker is also amazing. If I saw one of these neighbors would hear me shouting for my husband to come and see, and I'd probably scare them, and the beautiful woodpecker away too. We do get beautiful woodpeckers with red heads, but I've never seen a pileated one in the wild.

Both blue birds are wonderful, the first one is so perfect it could be artificial. That is so cool about the app, we don't have many birds, only about 3 different calls when we walk with the mocking bird in full voice loudly over and over. they make me laugh
