Shenandoah

These are some shots and sights we saw during our Saturday visit to Shenandoah Nat'l Park. Along the Skyline Drive there are these beautiful yellow wildflowers. They remind me of the Black Eyed Susan but the center is not black.

We hiked two different trails,  first was the Limberlost trail and is my favorite trail 1.3 mile loop. We were able to watch several deer and fawns on the trail as we walked. The deer did not seem to mind us at all and stood next to the trail as we walked by. The trail was very birdy, with warblers bouncing all the the trees. The warblers are quick movers and hard to focus on to get a good shot. I did manage to get this bird, it stayed still long enough for my photo. It has a yellow color along the side of its wings.

After the Limberlost trail we made our way down the Skyline Drive to the Big Meadows campstore to get lunch. Across from the campstore we saw this cool looking buck. The deer at Shenandoah do not seem to mind people and do not spook easily.

After lunch, we decided to hike the trail called Dark Hollows, this is a nice trail heading downhill to the waterfalls, but it is a steep hike coming back up to the parking lot. Dark Hollow is 1.5 miles and has a nice cascading waterfall.

Is it illegal to shoot the deers?

You have gained weight after the hiking because of the heavy photograph harvest.

What beautiful shots! I thoroughly enjoyed this spectacular visit to your part of the country. You certainly had a wonderful day of hiking and photography! What fun to be out and about where the deer are familiar with humans and allow such close proximity.

Nice work on the butterflies. I find them difficult to photograph. Getting the small birds to stay still is a challenge, but you did the job with the Blue-headed Vireo

That is a butterfly & a bee on your header!! Fabulous- what detail- everything is so bright and Summery Eileen, yet we're heading for Fall! Seems you know exactly what to look for without thinking and I bet you get a little exhausted after a hike like this? So, I guess I can understand why you like the mosaics as there is so much to take in. The bird is so sweet and the deer are awesome!
Now, I would of been by earlier but I was a tad afraid to lure you back to my not so sensible posts (lol)- thanks! Hope you have a wonderful day-

Hi Eileen --- We were just there (Aug.6-8).. I have been posting about our trip through the Blue Ridge and Skyline Drive areas. You can see my pictures by going to my sidebar and clicking on the label marked Birthday 2010... I posted the bears we saw in yesterday's blog.

We love the Shenandoah area.. We spent the night at the Skyland Resort. We didn't hike much this trip --but stopped at most of the overlooks. Both of your hikes look wonderful ... I will mark them for another time.

We want to see that waterfall sometime.... Beautiful...

Thanks for sharing, Eileen.
Hugs,
Betsy

This is a beautiful place, too. I like waterfalls.

(As I was typing this, I saw a neighbor out the window, and went to the door, as she was bringing our dog home from being loose. We ended up yakking outside, and another neighbor joined us. I made Heidi stay inside. Larry had forgotten to put the hook through the gate so she couldn't open it to get out.)

Oh, I remember what I was going to ask you. Do you ever see wild cats or bears on your hikes? I wouldn't know what to do if I saw one.
