A Vulture Sky

January 30, 2014

Linking up with NF Winged   and  Skywatch Friday

I am sharing Vulture Sky over my backyard...

The Turkey & Black Vultures are back to roosting in the trees next to my yard.

In the evening I can see them fly back toward the trees or sometimes just fly around in circles. I have become so used to seeing the vultures they are easy to tell the Black Vulture from the Turkey Vulture while they are in flight. The Black Vulture's wings seem shorter and more rounded edges. In the daylight the Black Vulture's wings have a white edge.

I cropped the image above to get a closer look at the v-shapped Canada Geese. They were a lot higher in the sky then the Vultures.

It was a neat sky to watch with the Turkey Vultures, Black Vultures, the contrail and the sunset. Also if you look at the top right corner you will see a large flock of black birds flying past.

We have the deer hunters to thank for all of these Vultures hanging in our neighborhood. The vultures have a feast on the deer carcass left behind. I do not mind the Vultures, they look pretty in flight.

Thank you for visiting my post, I hope you enjoyed my birds and skies.

To see more pretty skies from around the world please visit  Skywatch Friday
and to see more of the winged critters check out NF Winged

Thanks to Sylvia, Yogi  and Sandy for hosting Skywatch Friday! Thanks to Monica the host of NF Winged.   I wish everyone a safe and happy long weekend.

Hi Eileen, I do love your vultures, both kinds.
I'll make you a trade, you send me your blizzards and I'll gladly send you our 100+F temps, that way we will both be happy.

This would be awesome to see right in your own backyard! Stunning skies your way, Eileen.

While we have plenty of Turkey Vultures our way at migration time, I've never seen a Black Vulture yet.
One time at Point Pelee 5 flew over the Visitor's Centre while I was in the bathroom. Of course. lol

Watching them soar overhead is pretty cool.

But the poop...is disgusting. And my Rottie likes to lick it. "Oh...gross," he screamed like a girl.

Neat shots Eileen and it's nice to learn a little more about the Black Vulture. Have a great day!

Amazing photos, Eileen! We get the Turkey Vultures here. They fly right around town, just above the treetops. Then perch about a half block from our house in a big dead cottonwood for the night. Rather eerie.

Great shots Eileen. I visited with a gal yesterday who told me that they are not allowed to feed the birds anymore in their condo complex area because of the over population of turkey vultures. I guess they can be very destructive as they land and dig around for food. I found the news very sad because I love my bird visitors and couldn't bear being told I couldn't continue to feed them.

So that's where all the vultures are!! None here at the moment.

Wow, Eileen, I have really never seen a flight of vultures like that in a photo - amazing ! Good you see that they are a part of nature like everything else and have a place.

Gail Dixon said...

Why do the hunters leave the deer carcasses behind? Seems they'd want to take home the meat. Anyway, beautiful sky shots, Eileen! Will try to post to your meme on Saturday, even though I usually take weekends off from blogging.

We are seeing large flocks of vultures here in south Florida. They congregate to roost by the hundreds at a small wildlife preserve and the adjacent soccer fields. The cover the boardwalks and outbuildings and really smell bad, but as you say, they are beautiful in flight.

Gorgeous color in your sky and lots of vultures! I see them here, but usually as pairs or small flocks.

Merisi said...

What beautiful daily spectacle in your very own sky!
The sunset is sensational, too, like an Italian painting.

I never knew the hunters would live a deer carcass behind. Is it done to feed some creatures or out of carelessness? I don't think they are allowed to do this around here.

Happy Sky Watch,
Merisi

That’s a sky full of vultures. I have never seen so many in one place at one time. I cannot imaging them returning night after night. Glad you told us the remains of the deer attracted them. Beautiful captures.

Wow - amazing shots - I love how you got the geese and the little birds in the pictures too. I love the vultures - one time one flew up almost against our house - just about grazing it as it flew up a hill - and the swerved directly in front of a window to miss the house - I saw the feathers distinctly - it is an image burned into my mind.
