Monk Parakeet

Hello,

I am sharing another Florida lifer, the Monk Parakeet. I planned a  daytrip to see the Burrowing Owls and I happened to see the Monk Parakeet in the same spot along with a Loggerhead Shrike.

The Monk Parakeet is a bright green parrot with a grayish face and breast.

They are native to South America. They have established colonies in the USA.

I watch numerous Monk Parakeets going back and forth to this light pole. They were working on a nest.

  8. They have a humongous colony on a muni golf course I used to hit often. Their nests were right above the 14th tee. So noisy. Hard to concentrate on your drive. But they are cool birds.

  38. Hello Eileen. Thanks for visiting me in Spain. I'm back home now where it's easier to get online with a PC rather than a smartphone. Interesting bird the Monk Parakeet and I remember seeing them in the Canary Islands where thay have established a feral population.

  43. Hello Eileen!:) What an exciting find. I really enjoyed seeing these lovely green birds, and to actually see them in the wild making a nest must have been thrilling. The Monk Parakeet and the Rose-ringed Parakeet have both established colonise in Portugal, but I haven't had the pleasure of seeing them yet. Congrats on your lifer!:)

  44. Hello Eileen
These birds are such a lovely colour.
I like all of your photo's especially the ones showing the nest too - they have to work so hard to build it!

Enjoy the rest of your week.
