Shenandoah National Park

Happy Thursday, wishing everyone a great day!

On Jun 15th, hubby and I went on a day trip to Shenandoah National Park. These are some photos from along the way and at the park and on the Skyline Drive. We hiked the Limberlost Trail, walked on the Big Meadows and stopped at a few overlooks along the Skyline Drive.

On the drive to the park I was riding on Rt 340 just outside Berryville Virginia I looked over and saw a Roseate Spoonbill. A rare sighting for Virginia, I had to turn the car around and go back for some photos. Looks like a juvenile Roseate Spoonbill was hanging out on a flooded field with a couple of Mallards.

The White tailed deer can be seen along the Skyline Drive, usually early in the morning and later in the evening. Do your two deer, one is a little hidden. I wonder how many bike riders have seen bears along their rides, they could be surprised unexpectedly having a bear pop out on the drive.

A few Shenandoah Park birds, the top left I am not sure of it's id, the top middle bird is the female Eastern Towhee and top right is the male Eastern Towhee. Bottom left is a Cedar Waxwing, middle bottom row is a Song Sparrow and bottom right is a Blue-headed Vireo.

Columbine seen along the Skyline Drive.

Skipper on the mountain laurels.

A couple of sky shots taken at the Big Meadows, Shenandoah.

Some flower on the Big Meadows.

Black Bear seen along the Skyline Drive in the Northern Section of the park.

We were first to see this Black Bear along the Skyline Drive. I was glad not to have a line of cars in front or back of me.

I am thankful for the wildflowers, what a lovely sight.

I love seeing wildlife, I was thankful to see the Black Bear.

I am thankful for all your visits and comments.

  4. Skyline looks like a wonderful trail to drive to watch wild animals and birds! Spoonbills migrate to a bird sanctuary here during winters and I really enjoyed seeing the deer and bear here at close distance

  5. I wonder what is with all the black bear sightings this summer. So many of my fellow bloggers and facebook friends have seen them. I hope cities aren't shooting them. It always makes me angry when they do that. Have a great week Eileen.

  17. I would love to see a Black Bear! We were told last week at Lake Tahoe that they wander through the condo complex, but we missed seeing any. Not sure what my little dog would do, anyway, and I didn't want to endanger him. But still . . . -- Your photos of the bear are great!

  23. What a great sighting on the spoonbills! I have no idea of what your un-ID'd bird, but it reminds me of the Acadian FC ...one that is missing off my list. The bear sightings are just awesome! I was at Shenandoah August of 2016, I did see some bear and it was such a thrill. You live in a great area close to lots of wonderful places to visit.

  24. Another fun trip, and a perfect reminder of never knowing what you'll see, so you need to be ready! --That Roseate Spoonbill was fun to spot, I'm sure!

And next time you pass by Brunswick on 340 honk, this is my corner of the world! --Berryville is a cute little town, isn't it?

  31. Eileen - last weekend, my son and his girlfriend drove part of Skyline Drive and saw several black bears. It is very interesting to me that people seem to see more of them there than we do here in 'wild' Montana. Love the columbine - it is one of my favorite flowers - so unique with its shape! Enjoy your weekend!

  33. How exciting to see so much wildlife Eileen, especially the bear but I would have loved seeing the deer and the birds also. We were talking about walking Limberlost and Big Meadows only a few days ago, but I have a sore leg right now so will have to wait for a while. Glad you had such a great time up there. Enjoy your Friday and the weekend :)

  45. Great photos! Bears, birds, deer, a butterfly, and pretty flowers, too!
I think your no ID bird is an Eastern Phoebe. We have a lot of them here in north Mississippi, and they like to build their nests on our porch as close to the ceiling as possible, very much like the nest in your photo.
    Have a wonderful weekend!

I might have hurried off quickly, happy you snapped the pics.
