Saturday's Critters #308

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

Lately I have been hearing and seeing the Ruby-crowned Kinglets in my yard. On this day I found one bouncing around a vine wrapped around our wooden swing. They are quick movers and very small.

These birds have an eye ring but the ring is broken at the top and bottom.

I found it hard to get a clear shot of this bird, it was moving around too fast. Never staying still.  I think you can see a tiny red dot on the bird's head on the photo below.

This shot shows more of the tail and wing feathers.

This is not the best White-throated Sparrow photo and not my first sighting this year.  It was a rainy morning and the photo was taken from my dining room window. It is just a record of one of my winter yard birds seen recently.

I do not often keep a list of my yard birds but David and his blog, made me think of keeping a list one day of my yard birds seen in an hour or so.

Here is my list of 14 bird sightings and 4 birds heard:
Blue Jay
Northern Cardinal
Mourning Doves
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Wren
Turkey Vultures
Tufted Titmouse
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Downy Woodpecker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
White-throated Sparrow
House Finch
American Goldfinch

If I count birds heard and not seen, I would include the:
Pine Warbler
Pileated Woodpecker
American Crow
Canada Geese in flight.

I appreciate and thank everyone who links up their post and for all the wonderful comments !

Here is a list of my linky parties;

Also visit:  I'd-Rather-B-Birdin. Thanks to the gracious host: Anni.

  1. Dearest Eileen; Sweet Ruby-crowned Kinglets look very LOVELY among the Yellow Leaves♪ Yes, I do wish they would stay still more. When my husband takes me to the rice paddy, I sit back seat and take photos opening window, even so they are so sensitive.
White-throated Sparrow's yellow feather like thing on their face makes him look 'rugged' image; hope I am correct in English meaning.
Thank you very much for hosting and have a nice weekend.
    Sincerely from Japan, xoxo Miyako*

  4. Det är en riktig utmaning att fotografera småfåglarna, precis som du skriver rör de sig oavbrutet och därtill oftast i en skyddande vegetation. Jag tycker du lyckades bra med dina bilder.
    Trevlig helg Eileen!

  12. Thanks for the link to my blog, Eileen, it is appreciated. I understand exactly what you mean when you say that kinglets do not stay still for a moment. The only solution is to take lots of pictures and hope a couple turn out well. Maybe one day you will drive up into southern Ontario and we can go birding together. And come and have dinner with us too!

  16. We also had a bunch of Kinglets around for about ten days or so. They seem to have moved on since the cold temperatures hit.

    Have a happy weekend.

  20. Those kinglets are certainly active and evasive! Interestingly, I have seen these two species only once each here in south Florida over the 15 years we have lived here.

  21. this is fun and maybe i will do this once the leaves are gone completely. i was at my window yesterday, and still find it difficult with all the leaves still on the trees. i think i have photographed a ruby crowned kinglets, or maybe just a kinglet???. i had the i.d. wrong and david corrected me. i have not seen the white throated sparrows yet, but i suspect they will be back soon. have you checked your camera for the "continuous" feature?? that allows your camera to shoot continuously on bird that move a lot. that might help if your camera has that feature.

have a great weekend, it's going to get chilly next week. many thanks for hosting!!!

  22. I've seen kinglets here but not very often. You show why we don't see them often. They are well colored to hide in the leaves.

  34. how wonderful to see and here that many birds. I envy you.
We have a cousin to your Kinglet but I rarely see it. So small and it wants to hide in firs. At the top! Of course. :)
I wish you a great week with many birds.

  35. That Ruby-crowned Kinglet is such a pretty little bird...I want to go look it up at All about Birds now to see what it sound like.

  36. Loved reading your yard bird count. AND VIEWING your photos today Eileen. Some birds are such a challenge to get even a picture. Most often, for me, the bird has flown out of the picture frame & all I have is blurred branches!

Stopping by I'd Rather B Birdin this week and sharing your link is appreciated...thanks!

  37. Hi Eileen. Your kinglets are so much like our Goldcrests and Firecrests. They never keep still either making it very difficult to get a good photo. Except when we catch them for banding.

  38. So nice to be able to have so many variety of birds visiting your yard. You take good captures of the birds and it would be good to have a list of the birds that visited your yard.

  39. My sister gave me the most beautiful naturalist book and journal and I must write about it sometime. Interestingly, I have the very same birds noted in it. It is always surprising and fun to add up just how many we see. I enjoy trying to identify the sparrows too. Lovely little kinglet.

  40. Hi Eileen, I've been keeping a list of birds that have visited my yard since 2016 and have 19 different ones. It's amazing when you write them down. I also have seen 13 different wildlife critters, too. Don't you just love it. Have a great weekend.

  42. Beautiful creatures! I love my yard birds. I like to show them to my grandkids and we look them up in one of my little bird books to identify them. Then we write down the date we saw them next to their photo. They have become quite good at recognizing them.

  43. What pretty little birds! The green ones blend in with the foliage. I love the stripes on the head of the bird in the final image.
