Saturday's Critters # 463

 Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

I have more Kauai photos, I will be sharing some more of my lifer birds. Going through my photos so far I found 16 new birds in Kauai. My life list is up to 496. These photos are from Anini Beach and the Hanalei NWR.

Click on photos for better viewing.

1. Sept 26, below scenes and birds seen at the Anini Beach Park. A cute dog and his Mama go sailing, hubby snorkeling, chicken, White-rumped Shama, Anini Beach, a view of the Kileaua Point Lighthouse, Red-crested Cardinal, mural on the restroom, two Red-crested Cardinals.

2. The White-rumped Shama is a thrush like bird, non-native and was introduced to Kauai. It is black with the white spot on the rump and has a brick orange breast and belly and a long black tail.

3. The Red-crested Cardinals were one of my favorite Kauai birds.

4.  We visited the Hanalei NWR, it is were we saw the Hawaiian Coot and the Hawaiian Gallinule, the Hawaiian Nene Goose and a distant Black-crowned Night Heron. We walked a little on the Okolehao Trail, mostly a dirt trail with lots of tree roots. I heard a lot of birds on this trail but they were hidden in all the greenery.

5. The Nene Goose is found exclusively found on the Hawaiian Islands. It is Hawaii's State Bird. Status is endangered.

6. The Hawaiian Coot, it is smaller than the American Coot with a larger more bulbous frontal shield above the white bill.

7. Hawaiian Gallinule or also called the Hawaiian Moorhen, the difference from our Moorhen is their shorter wings and longer legs. It has the red bill with a yellow tip.

8. A view of the Hanalei NWR from the overlook. We started off our walk down in the valley, you can just barely make out the one lane road next to the stream.

A bonus image, we went for a visit to see the grandkids after being away. Here is hubby (Pop-pop) dancing with Wyatt and it looks like the grand-dogs wanted to dance too.

Thank you for sharing your critters and post!

Thanks to all my visitors and for your past and present comments. Stop back to see any replies to your comments. I appreciate everyone who loves and respects wildlife. Thank you for linking up a critter post.

  21. Hi Eileen, I enjoyed all the photos from your Hawaiian trip. I admire your birding life list … wow, 496 is wonderful. I wish I had started a list years ago but, sadly, I never did. Your comments about the Coot and Moorhen and the differences between the ones in Hawaii and the ones here on the Mainland are interesting. Being separated by such a long distance over water, might have been the reason for differences in their evolution? I am curious about that. My favorite photos in this post are: The view of Hanalei NWR from the overlook, and, of course, Wyatt and Pop-pop dancing with the dogs. 😊 Thanks, as always, for hosting and sharing Saturday’s Critters and thank you for your kind comment on my blog. Interesting new birds for you and me both. I love the White-rumped Shama and the red heads, they look like their colours are red, white and blue of the American flag, but perhaps the blue I see is grey! The red crested Cardinals are beautiful. Lovely view of the valley and best of all is the picture of Wyatte dancing with Granddad, I'll bet it was such a happy reunion.
