I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes
January 21, 2014
I am sharing more of the Long-tailed ducks that we saw on the Jersey shore last week. They are one of my favorite ducks. They are found wintering on the Atlantic coast and they breed in the northernmost Canada and Alaskan tundra.
The male has a white head and a tan face with a white body. The female has dark brown crown with a white cheek patch.
These cute long-tailed ducks are close behind my all time favorite Black-bellied Whistling ducks for their adorable faces.
I cropped a few of these photos. It was hard keeping the camera still on this cold and blustery day at the beach.
I hope you enjoyed my Long-tailed ducks. Thanks for stopping by my post and for all the nice comments.

they're a very pretty duck; not sure I've seen them before
The lady looks like she is wearing a hat, very fashionable. They don't look like they have long tails?
Great shots of the long tailed ducks.
They are beautiful!! That looks like some frigid water that they are swimming in!
Great shots of the Long-tailed ducks. Thank goodness the cold doesn't affect them like it does us! :)
Do you think the hurricane has affected the bird animal population at the shore? I always love seeing your photos and today seeing the water made me think of the many birds, ducks, animals that must have been affected. Their habitat alone must have been destroyed.
Never saw one of these, so thanks for the lesson!...:)JP
Nice photos, Eileen! I don't believe I've ever seen a long-tailed duck before.
Recently, like within the last week or so, we've had them reported in our bays also, but I haven't seen 'em. NOW, thanks to you, I know just what to look for. Excellent images as always Eileen...that water, by the way, looks mighty cold!
Beautiful pictures of this Long-tailed Ducks.
Last picture is my favorite.
Very well photographed, Eileen.
You did great with your photos Eileen. Such interesting markings, another duck you have introduced me to. Thank you! :)
i'm giving the whistlers notice that they have some STIFF competition! :) and i agree. they are sweet ducks!
Cute ducks!
Lucky you! to see and photograph these beautiful ducks. This was one that I'd hoped to see a couple of weekends ago that other birders reported, but I never found it.
I love ducks! I have never seen these, they're cute!
Great pictures. I miss being on the coast.
This is a first-time bird for me even virtually. Have never heard of a long-tail duck... what a neat duck they are...
Brave birder to be out when it is so cold!
I'd never seen these before - they are wonderful. Great photos.
A lovely Duck species. I have just seen my first UK one .... happy days
We get them up here too! I love them. We had one on Gloucester Harbor that my wife called "the Billy Idol duck".
I was thinking it must have been a blustery day. The water looks pretty choppy.
Cute captures of these sweet looking ducks!
They are so cute! Very unique looking. You got some good shots!
Hello Eileen!!!Such beautiful ducks!!Great shots!!!Nice captures!!
Wish you a happy new week!!Hugs!!
Dimi...
Brilliant images Eileen.
Hi Eileen, I can certainly see why these Long-tailed ducks are favorites of yours. Gorgeous! Very similar in looks to the Buffleheads and also a bit to the Pintails. Have a super good day tomorrow!
Those Long-tails are amazing I've never seen that many in one place, we only get the odd one in winter.
All the best Gordon.
A beautiful contribution to WBW!
Te kaczki mają ciekawe upierzenie, są śliczne. Pozdrawiam.
These ducks have interesting plumage, are beautiful. Yours.
Lovely shots of the ducks. Have a great day!
Awww..they really look cute :-). It seems like they have put those powder that women put on their face to make their cheeks look rosy (huh! I am also a woman, but don't know what that make up is called as I have never used make up!!). Ducks in ocean! it seems difficult to imagine as I always think that they are creatures of ponds and lakes. I like your shots as their faces are perfectly clear.
lovely photos, one of my favourite ducks too,
Hello Eileen, it's for me a great pleasure to receive your visit!I have loved so much your beautiful photos.

Wow, really pretty. I didn't have to put up with supper cold winds here in the South to get my birding shot this week. You are one tough cookie. :)
The faces of these ducks are indeed adorable. You did a great job of getting good pictures on such a cold day.
Some of this species are also visible in our ports in winter only;-)
