Long-tailed Ducks

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

January 21, 2014

I am sharing more of the Long-tailed ducks that we saw on the Jersey shore last week. They are one of my favorite ducks. They are found wintering on the Atlantic coast and they breed in the northernmost Canada and Alaskan tundra.

The male has a white head and a tan face with a white body. The female has dark brown crown with a white cheek patch.

These cute long-tailed ducks are close behind my all time favorite Black-bellied Whistling ducks for their adorable faces.

I cropped a few of these photos. It was hard keeping the camera still on this cold and blustery day at the beach.

I hope you enjoyed my Long-tailed ducks. Thanks for stopping by my post and for all the nice comments.

The lady looks like she is wearing a hat, very fashionable. They don't look like they have long tails?

Great shots of the long tailed ducks.

They are beautiful!! That looks like some frigid water that they are swimming in!

Great shots of the Long-tailed ducks. Thank goodness the cold doesn't affect them like it does us! :)

Do you think the hurricane has affected the bird animal population at the shore? I always love seeing your photos and today seeing the water made me think of the many birds, ducks, animals that must have been affected. Their habitat alone must have been destroyed.

Never saw one of these, so thanks for the lesson!...:)JP

Recently, like within the last week or so, we've had them reported in our bays also, but I haven't seen 'em. NOW, thanks to you, I know just what to look for. Excellent images as always Eileen...that water, by the way, looks mighty cold!

Lucky you! to see and photograph these beautiful ducks. This was one that I'd hoped to see a couple of weekends ago that other birders reported, but I never found it.

I was thinking it must have been a blustery day. The water looks pretty choppy.

Hi Eileen, I can certainly see why these Long-tailed ducks are favorites of yours. Gorgeous! Very similar in looks to the Buffleheads and also a bit to the Pintails. Have a super good day tomorrow!

Those Long-tails are amazing I've never seen that many in one place, we only get the odd one in winter.
All the best Gordon.

Lovely shots of the ducks. Have a great day!

Awww..they really look cute :-). It seems like they have put those powder that women put on their face to make their cheeks look rosy (huh! I am also a woman, but don't know what that make up is called as I have never used make up!!). Ducks in ocean! it seems difficult to imagine as I always think that they are creatures of ponds and lakes. I like your shots as their faces are perfectly clear.
