Bombay Hook NWR

Linking up with Skywatch Friday  and Good Fences

Sharing my photos from our most recent visit to Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware.. a sunrise shot and some scenes from our birding outing to Delaware.. We stopped at Port Mahon to look for owls and than we drove part of the wildlife drive at Bombay Hook NWR.. We were sad to see part of the wildlife drive was closed for hunting..I wish I had known in advance about the closure :(

For Skywatch Friday...the sunrise seen during our drive, I had to pull off the road to get this shot..

Port Mahon Road we searched for the Snowy Owl and Short Eared Owls but no luck there. We did see a young Red Tailed Hawk or Red Shouldered? And a adult Bald Eagle..

We stood on the pier to be up higher to look for the owls above the grasses.. This is the view from the pier looking out at the Delaware Bay. I hope this shot counts for both Skywatch and Good Fences..

Some of the birds we saw on the wildlife drive at Bombay Hook NWR. A Horned Lark, two more hawks and a Great Blue Heron.

Above a frozen pond, some Tundra Swans, ducks and gulls..

A couple of Tundra Swans and Canada Geese and a gull.

On the way home from Delaware..a shot for my Good Fence post.. a drive by barn and fence scene..

To end my post I have  my capture of the crescent moon taken the evening before our Delaware trip..

I hope you enjoyed our Delaware day trip and photos.. Thanks for stopping by and for the nice comments..I hope you enjoyed your visit.

  2. Hi Eileen. It looks like a lovely day out despite the cold. What a shame that hunting takes priority over people who want to appreciate wildlife rather than shoot it.

  4. Hello Eileen, these are all great pictures!
    Beautiful sunrise, beautiful critters.
Especially the swans with the ducks lined up :)
But my absolute favourite is the third one,
the pier into nowhere with a very pale sun :))
    Have a very happy day!

  18. I really love that shot of the pier pointing off to that beautiful misty sky. super shot and yes it counts for both in my book.... i would love to see swans in the wild. i have only seen them in parks and they are captive.

  19. Wow, that pier capture is priceless, it's like we can walk right out on it. Sorry about the closure, I really hate when those things happen too.

  26. Lovely images - I especially like the pier. The sunrise is wonderful - winter gives us some glorious sunrises (and sunsets as well). The birds are lovely.

  27. That first sky shot is gorgeous! You're lucky to have such a wonderful place in your 'backyard' so to speak. Looks like a wonderful way to spend the day.

  28. you always share such a beautiful variety of nature!! the skies have been amazing this winter and that pier shot is simply spectacular!!!!

ohhhh and the glimpse of that red barn....all are just wonderful!!!!

  29. Lovely set of images. I love the two swans watched by the row of geese!! Like watching bird royalty floating past. And then you see the birds have all turned their heads...asleep maybe?

  30. Nice walk .. The swans, geese and gull together is a good picture plus showing the relative sizes is a bonus. We once drove 25 miles to a refuge to find it closed on Fridays to "give the birds a rest". At least it was for a better reason than hunting (IMHO).

  31. Fantastic shot of the pier, Eileen, and nice photo of the swans and geese as well!

  32. My wife and I once attended a wedding in Harrisonburg, VA and took the long way home up the coast. We spent a day at Bombay Hook, one of the great birding spots I have ever visited.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. Much appreciated!

  35. Love those. The shot from the pier is great. Doesn't it seem weird that a wildlife refuge would allow hunting? Isn't it supposed to be a refuge? The two WR we have camped at this year allow hunting too.

  36. Hello Eileen!!

Great captures of the sky and the moon!
Love the shots with the bay and the birds!

  37. It was fun to try to figure out your two hawks in the mosaic. Maybe you captured a Northern Harrier (upper right) and a young Red-tailed Hawk (lower left). But I'm far from an expert! - BusybodyinDE :o)

  80. I did indeed enjoy your Bombay Hook NWR photos. I, too, wish they hadn't closed the trail, and especially for such a cruel (to me) reason. Sorry you didn't see owls but your sightings were amazing nevertheless, and as many have noted, the pier shots are extraordinary. The horned lark was especially interesting to me (hadn't heard of, let alone see one) and I always love your shots of the moon. Many thanks for sharing your world, Eileen!

  84. Wait a minute, doesn't NWR stand for National Wildlife Refuge? Doesn't refuge, by definition mean a place of safety? Why hunting in a refuge? That hardly seems fair :(
Fabulous moon photo by the way.
