Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes
I am sharing some of my more recent American Goldfinch photos and one summer time photo for comparison..It seems that lately the males are starting to wear their pretty black caps..
This summer the top of this Goldfinch's head will be sporting a black cap.. But for now you can see the black is working it's way back..
The Goldfinches are year round residents in my yard and in Maryland..
This could be the female and she will not have any black on her head.
They are sweet birds to have at the feeders and they seem to hang around with the Pine Siskins in the winter..
Here is the male American Goldfinch in the summer, wearing the black cap. I hope you enjoyed my wild bird post.. Till next week's wild bird post.. I wish you happy Birding and have a wonderful week!

ReplyDeleteYes, the finches are here all winter eating me out of house and home..no Siskins here...The finches are just starting to get a yellow hue..
ReplyDeleteLovely to see your Goldfinch version Eileen.
ReplyDeleteWe have a few visiting our feeders BUT already in full breeding plumage.
Such pretty little birds - and such clear photos.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bird!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful serie for the bird theme!
ReplyDeleteMy birdpost: https://hanshb.wordpress.com/
Very nice these pictures of the American Goldfinch. These finches you do not see in the Netherlands and I am therefore pleased with the blogger phenomenon. Now I can watch them with you:-)
ReplyDeleteYour finch are ahead of mine ... they haven't started their color change yet, though I expect it soon. It makes me wonder what triggers the change. I know many things are based on day length, but I suspect our day length is much the same as yours, so there must be something else involved ... interesting :) I might have to look it up ...

I love bullfinch and these goldfinches are as lovely. I like the roundy head female. The male goldfinch does look like a male from his appearance.
ReplyDeleteThey are such pretty little birds. Lots of them around here in the summer. Haven't seen any at all this winter.
ReplyDeleteI learn a lot about birds from you.
ReplyDeleteMerle..........

ReplyDeleteIt amazes me how you get such great close ups.
ReplyDeleteThey are wonderful birds to have around. We have them year-round also, but I haven't seen too many this year.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of the goldfinch. I mostly see them at the end of the summer feeding on the seed heads left over on my flowers.
ReplyDeleteEileen, These are fabulous shots. I love their markings.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. I go gaga over yellow birds. The yellowest bird I've ever seen was our once-upon-a-time parakeet.
ReplyDeleteOne of my faves! You got some beautiful shots!
ReplyDeletePrecious shots of the goldfinches, Eileen! By the time these guys are in their breeding attire, they will be leaving us, so I never get to see them all decked out. :(

ReplyDeleteJust catching up on a missed post here. We have Goldfinches here as well, but they are much less common than the House Finches and sparrows and I still feel excited whenever I see them. Your photos are absolutely beautiful, Eileen! Have a wonderful Friday!
ReplyDeleteHello Eileen...I read this post earlier and then was counting for PFW and tried to look at my goldfinch, but there was some more snow and about 35 goldfinch so I am not sure. I was trying to make sure there were no siskins mixed in for my count. I do love these little birds...Michelle
ReplyDeleteWe're not quite ready for spring here. I'm ready, but not mother nature...
ReplyDeleteWow! Doesn't that black and yellow look dramatic!! Of course, the non-breeding colours are lovely too :D
