Anhinga

Hello,

Today, I am sharing the Anhinga. It is a common bird in Florida. The Anhinga is also known as American Darter or the Snakebird.

There is at least one Anhinga on this tree with a few Cormorants. Can you find the Anhinga?  The bill is different on the Anhinga, sharper and thin.

The Anhinga can stay under water for a long period of time.

The male is a dark color almost glossy looking. Their wings are streaked with white.

Anhinga seen at Circle B Reserve.

Pretty colors on the breeding male Anhinga.

Thank you for stopping by and as always I appreciate your comments.

My list of memes for today, I hope to see you there. Thanks to both of the host below.

Hi Eileen, great photos and information on your anhinga. I saw it on the left of that tree? Beautiful photos of the male - special lighting in that image. We also call them darters and in Afrikaans they're called snake-neck. Thanks for sharing. Great post all round. Greetings Jo

Excellent photographs! I remember seeing cormorants when I was down in Florida; now I'm wondering if some of them were anhingas. Thanks for the informative post!

Dearest Eileen; Oh, Anhinga is really different from cormorant which I can see in our parks☆☆☆ Your pictures really show us their characteristics♪ The last pictures' blue ring of the eye of the male is spectacular and must be enchanting to the females:-)

Judith just shared a photo of the anhinga on her site too! You have captured the beauty of this rather unusual bird Eileen. So pretty with the white streaks in his wings. I find they're such a large bird to be diving into the water compared to other diving birds. That sharp beak looks like it could really spear his dinner with ease!

Superb capture on the snakebirds... the darter does exist here too and first time seeing it at the bird sanctuary we actually thought it as snake. Wonderful detail on the images
