These are some photos from our latest walk on the Susquehanna River trail. I was hoping to see the Bald Eagles below the dam but the only way to get in was to take a shuttle. The parking lot was full and they let cars in when someone leaves. Hubby and I decided not to wait, neither of us likes crowds of people so we took a walk further downstream.
On the way to the river and trail we came across this large flock of Common Grackles. They are on the fields on both sides of the road. Some took off and flew across in front of my car.
I believe these are the American Black Ducks.

We saw a small flock of Cedar Waxwings at the beginning of the trail.

The first duck seem to be a black duck. But the group are Mallards. The "hook" is clearly visible on the sleeping males tail :)
I still have not seen any waxwing and probably will not either. There is not much fruit for them to eat where I live this winter. :(

What a spectacular gathering of grackles-- what to call it? Murmuration refers to starlings-- Congrakelation sounds better! Any other ideas?

wow, a gazillion grackles in one photo. and that must be one busy place to require parking when someone leaves and also a shuttle to ride... i hope you did not overdose on birds. lol

I always think of the Alfred Hitchcock movie when I see a big flock of birds like that. How neat to see a different duck! The cold has dipped down to Florida today but it's still not bad! Enjoy your weekend! Hugs!

the flocks of grackles are amazing, i have been seeing them all over my neighborhood. even though i don't love grackles, they are amazing to see in these flocks!!

Goodness, all the gackles!!
I would really have enjoyed that large flock of grackles. Those spectacles are impressive. My wife and I were once looking out the bedroom window and thousands and thousands of Common Grackles passed by. It last for several minutes and they just kept on coming. It was truly memorable.
Wow, that first shot is fantastic. It's amazing how seeing a large flock birds can make you feel. I find it incredibly energizing.

Wow! That’s a huge flock of birds I ever seen and they all resemble our crow! The riverside seems to be a bird paradise and glad u got to see a bald eagle

YIKES! That's a LOT of grackles. They could have used that photo in the film The Birds!

A LOT of grackles! And so noisy! :-) Loved the cedar waxwing as well.
Absolutely stunning Grackles, so many of them.
I've never seen such large groups of Grackles before. We get big flocks of starlings in the fall but not as big as that!

Wow, that first scene reminds me of that horror film - birds! I imagine it could be quite frightening being in the middle of that flock.
Cedar waxwings are so beautiful...I don't see them very often here and never get to take photos. That sure is a bunch of grackles!

Neat shots! I'm not a fan of crowds either.
So beautiful. Some 40,000 cranes are now visiting us on the way to warmer climes. They are all staying around one lake, an amazing sight, and there is a large scale government project to feed them so that they don't destroy the fields around the lake.

I am always thinking of Saturday’s Critters
when I look out the kitchen window
and see many birds at the new feeding station
with the three new feeders and one old perfect thistle seed feeder.
BUT . . . I am not fast enough to get some good pictures . . .

Cedar Waxwings are so gorgeous. I think it's their coloring I'm attracted to. I do not miss the flocks of Grackles out this way, nor do I miss seeing those big, black rat snakes!!...:)JP

How many Grackles do you think that was?? I had a similar experience yesterday, in my and my neighbors' front yards. They just swooped in everywhere! When they began to swarm the feeders, I went outside to scare them off... but they didn't move! Went even closer... nothing. But when they got ON the feeders, I clapped my hands loudly and whoosh! They flew away to the back yard... People around here went to the Virginia Eastern Shore a couple of weekends back, and saw flocks of blackbirds, but mixed in there were a few Yellow-headed ones! So, check them out... you never know! Hugs!
