Saturday's Critters # 443

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

I am sharing various images from our local walks, I never know what we will see on our walks. I always take some photos of whatever I see, mostly anything nature related.

1. May 9th I have photos from our walk to the lake with the dogs and some more of my back yard birds. In the mosaic are the grand-dogs, a view of our lake, Canada Geese, a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher on the nest, A Baltimore Oriole half hidden in the leaves, Mallard Ducks, more dog photos and a wild azalea.

2. The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is seen and heard in our forest. I found this one on a nest near our lake.

3.  May 7th, I've been seeing the Scarlet Tanagers all around our yard also on the same day I saw the American Redstart in our back yard. I think they were enjoying our pond and catching bugs to eat.

4. The male American Redstart was hanging out in the back part of our yard.

5. May 10th, our back yard birds. The Scarlet Tanager is being seen just about every day, another Northern Parula and the Red-bellied Woodpecker.

6. May 10th a larger view of the male Scarlet Tanager, he is a beauty.

He sat in the dead tree in our yard, that we left for the woodpeckers.

7. May 11th, our walk on the fire road a Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly , Pink Lady Slippers, Winnie the Corgi, Scarlet Tanager and a Blue-throated Blue Warbler.

8. May 12th, our morning walk to the lake with dogs, we saw a fishing boat, the Canada Geese, Solitary Sandpiper and a Black Vulture.

9. May 15th, another walk on the fire road with the grand-dogs. Another sighting of the Scarlet Tanager and back in my yard a wet Tufted Titmouse.

10. May 16th,  Photos from our morning walk to the lake with the dogs. Near the lake we saw some wild azaleas in bloom, an Osprey and some unknown pink wildflowers.

11. May 17th, our walks continue some times without the dogs. On this day hubby and I took a walk to see the Bald Eagles nest at the lake. We saw two Eaglets and the Bald Eagle couple all on the nest. Other birds seen were the Ovenbird and the Eastern Kinglets. We heard multiple Hooded Warblers calling while we walked on the fire road.

I hope your enjoyed my photos, I am looking forward to seeing your critter post.

  1. Eileen - amazing that you saw that gnat-catcher - it is so well-camouflaged in the nest. I am thrilled to see the photos of a Scarlet Tanager - I have heard of this bird, obviously, but have never seen it in the wild. How wonderful that you see multiples of it! Enjoy your weekend!

  2. The scarlet tanager has been one of my favorites for a long time -- and I do mean long, as I had a child's bird book before I went to school, and I remember this as one of the depicted birds! Tanagers are such amazing colors. I enjoyed all your bird pictures. Thank you for hosting and for visiting my blog.

  21. Once again you give us a treat of colourful migrant birds Eileen. It is never easy photographing birds at the nest because they are so reluctant to give the game away. I think you are very fortunate to be able to know where the eagles nest and to be able to see the whole family at the nest. If the adults have reared two this year, they have done very well. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and thanks for the link up.

  23. Dearest Eileen,
the Scarlet Tanager is really a beauty. I'm always amazed at the colors of the birds in America. We have kingfishers, bee-eaters, robins, bullfinches and various woodpeckers - but I think that sums up Europe's most colorful birds. In your blog and the blogs that I got to know through you, I always see so many beautiful animals and learn a lot. I am very grateful to you for that! There were many wonderful things to see in your post today as well.
All the best and happy weekend!

  24. PS: Thanks for your comment to my previous post - you wrote "The Worm looks very long." - The slowworm is unfortunately often confused with a snake - in fact it is completely harmless: a lizard without legs, this one was only about 30 cm long, may be a young one? For more informations see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_worm

  27. Hi Eileen, loved all the birds but the Scarlet Tanager shot was perfection!! He loves something in yard to be out there in the open that way...and the Redstarts great finds also...I have always called the pink flower "wild honeysuckle", but in reality its called Piedmont Azalea. It's native. The vine honeysuckle we find everywhere is actually an invasive Japanese Honeysuckle...so the Piedmont is preferred and it grows in a bush form. This was one of my Mom's favorite wild plants..

    1. Thank you Sondra! I think we have the invasive honeysuckle growing here too, it spreads easily. Have a great weekend.

  50. Hi Eileen, I was immediately curious about the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. I don’t believe I have seen one before. The “range map” I found does not show them getting into Washington, so, thank you for sharing your photo. The color of the Scarlet Tanagers gets me thinking about how nature applies colors to creatures. Truly fascinating. I love to see the dogs on the walks with you and hubby. :-) Image 11 of 11, lower right corner, looking up through the tall trees … award winner for sure! :-) Thanks for sharing Saturday’s Critters #443!
