Saturday's Critters # 464

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

I am still making my way through our Kauai trip photos. One of my favorite birds to see was the Rose-ringed Parakeet. I am a fan of Parrots, Parakeets and Macaws. It is sad that this bird is considered an invasive species in Kauai, they are native to India. They are known to destroy crops, such as corn crops and fruit trees. Kauai residents are not happy with thousands of these birds coming in screeching loudly and leaving behind their droppings. I knew I would never be visiting India so I was a happy birder to see hundreds of these Parakeets fly in at sunset to roost in a large group of palm trees near a Mexican Restaurant called Monico's in Kapa'a.

Click on photos for better viewing.

1. Sept 27, a mosiac showing the Rose-Ringed parakeets in Kapaa Kauai.

2. I loved seeing all the parakeets, it was a sight to see and hear these birds come in waves and land in the palm trees.

3. Photos are NOT the greatest, the sun was setting and we were a distance from the palm trees.

4. With the sunset, the lighting was not the best for taking photos of the birds. I did try to brighten the photos some for better viewing.

5. This is a view of the palm tree across the street from the restaurant, the birds landed at the very top of these trees.

6. When I said there were waves of these Rose-ringed Parakeets flying in, this was one of the waves.  You can imagine the sound coming from all these birds, I enjoyed the show.

7. There were times the Parakeets got lost in the palm leaves, I was able to see some of these pretty birds out in the open.

8. We enjoyed our dinner at the Monico's Mexican Restaurant in Kapa'a , I loved seeing the Rose-ringed parakeets flying in to roost for the night.

Coming soon, more scenes and birds from our visit to Kauai.

Thank you for sharing your critters and post!

Parakeet is one of my favourite birds. I have never seen such big numbers of parakeets such as these. Beautiful photos with the palm trees.

What a wonderful sight to see and sound to hear Eileen as evening falls. I remember seeing the same kind of thing from my bedroom balcony in Costa Rica. Thrilling. Thanks for hosting and all the comments you leave. I hope you week ahead will be wonderful.

Hello Eileen and thanks for sharing your experience with the Parakeets. Sad to say, but here we are starting having the same problem with deer. They are cute and nice, but they are too many. They don't have natural enemies.
Anyway both parakeets and deer are a cute view.
Happy weekend to you!

Gy morning Eileen. That's a good description of the Rose ringed Parakeets of them arriving in waves. I remember the doing just that around the Taj Mahal in India. Very noisy creatures and not one of my favorite birds. Thank you the link up today and have a fun weekend.

So nice to see the parakeets in free nature.

They are beautiful birds and have adapted to their life in Hawaii, hopefully not at the expense of local species.

Hello Eileen :=)

Wow! what a fabulous view of the waves of Parakeets flying in to roost in the Palm trees. Rose-ringed Parakeets are very pretty birds. It's a shame they are destructive, and noisy, but they look beautiful in your pictures.
All the best Eileen, and thank you for hosting.

...I've never seen Parakeets in Hawaii, what a sight. Thanks Eileen, for sharing and hosting, enjoy a wonderful weekend.

David M. Gascoigne, said...

They are beautiful. No one can deny that, but the local avifauna would be better off without them. There are so many non-native species on Hawaii it's difficult to understand why people released them there.

Bill said...

I wonder if these are the same kind of parakeets which I saw in St. Petersburg FL a few years ago. Flocks would fly around and get on wires or trees. Whichever was highest.

I see the parakeets daily in the palm and mango trees opposite our house, but not in this large number. Even though you couldn't travel to India, I'm glad you were able to enjoy the local birds of our country. I love all of the pictures! Have a nice weekend

It is too bad that they have become such pests but they are beautiful. They remind me of the large groups of Starlings that fly around here.

Yvonne said...

They are such pretty birds. Reminds me a bit of how starlings over here are a real pain when they flock together, and super noisy. I can appreciate what a site that must have been.

Good morning Eileen, I think all of these photos are just great, especially since I've yet to visit this marvelous place. Someday I hope. Nature cures all in my heart and soul, through photos and of course face to face. We have been so lucky so far with these wonder days, it's almost hard to be that November is here! Enjoy your weekend, ours is a bit cooler, and rainy but hey they promise some warmer days ahead. Yes! High 60's for Wednesday! Take care.

Those are great shots. Of all places, at my daughter's in New Haven there are green monk parrots. Originally escapees, they say, who love it there and have huge colonies. It is a treat to see exotic birds live naturally.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Andree! I have seen the Monk Parrots in Florida. I like seeing these birds in the wild more than in a cage.

Hi Eileen, What a neat post to see all the Parakeets flying in at sunset to roost in the palm trees. This is funny … the large group of birds at sunset reminded me of a time, long ago, when my folks took me to Carlsbad Caverns, in New Mexico, and we saw all the bats flying out of the cave near sunset. It was surely a sight to see! Sure enjoyed all your pictures and happy for you having such a nice trip to Hawaii. Thanks for hosting and sharing and for your kind comments on my blog. John

Hi Eileen, Thank you for your reply here and on my blog. It is always a pleasure to link up with you. After I said what I did about Carlsbad, I worried later that you might not appreciate the comparison Parakeets (joyful) to Bats (ominous). So, I'm delighted to know you've been there and appreciate the experience. Have a happy week ahead! John

eileeninmd said...

John, I appreciate all things nature related. When hubby and I travel we pick places that we both would enjoy. I knew hubby would love the caverns, he likes caving and I knew about the bats leaving the caves along with the Cave Swallows. The caverns and the wildlife were all amazing sights to see. Enjoy your day!

Adorei as imagens, Eileen! Terá sido uma viagem memorável, com a natureza mostrando toda a sua beleza e exuberância!
Um beijinho! Desejando-lhe uma feliz semana!...
