Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes and Good Fences
For this weeks wild bird I am sharing the Black Vulture..
Besides seeing the Bald Eagles at the Susquehanna River, this area seems to be a hot spot to see lots of Black Vultures.. They were everywhere we looked. On the cars, fences, on the ground and in the trees..
We came across the owner of this car walking back from the trail, she had to shoo away these Black Vultures off her car.. They did not move away too quickly..
This one started pecking at the car, remind me of the time we were in the Everglades and were told to cover our car with tarp.. The vultures like to pick the rubber off around the car windows. Not sure why they like to do this though?
They were lined up on the fence near the river's edge..
The Bald Eagle did not seem to mind sharing their space with the Black Vultures..
I hope you enjoyed my post and the Black Vultures.. I was happy to see these birds posing on the fences for me..

Happy Birding and have a wonderful week!
Amazing!!!.. These raptors are free? or is a nature park ?? one Zoo???. Is Spain Vultures, eagles. all the raptors are extremely suspicious .. Very hard to take pictures ... Have a great week Eileen :-)))
ReplyDeleteI imagine they can do some serious scratching with those claw-y feet on a vehicle. Years back, I caught my chickens all sitting in a row on my brand new truck. There were a lot of scratches to be buffed out.........
ReplyDeleteBlack vultures and bald eagles coexisting peacefully - I love it :)
ReplyDeletei might be the only one but they are one of my favs. i love vultures. that protective amour. so cool!! ( :
ReplyDeleteHello Eileen :)
ReplyDeleteIf I get to see more blog posts about vultures I might start loving them ;)
In your previous post you showed a really small picture of a really great sunset - can you please show that one in full size? It has such beautiful colours :))

Excellent captures!
ReplyDeleteAs always, your photos are amazing! I've never seen a vulture of any kind "in person" outside of a zoo. I think they're fascinating. Probably a little intimidating too, if you are the owner of a car they decide they like!
ReplyDeleteInteresting . . . I wonder what they were "vulturing!"
ReplyDeleteThey are neat looking birds. (my wife thinks I'm crazy). They fill their niche well.
ReplyDeleteThey are quite the big--and impressive--birds!
ReplyDeleteI love these shots. Very symbolic of the coming winter season.
ReplyDeleteWell that was quite the sight .Great captures of them too. Loved seeing the Bald Eagle .
ReplyDeleteHappy December to you Eileen
Hi Eileen, It is my opinion that the Black Vultures are better looking and more "Normal" looking than the Turkey Vultures. I think it is due to the fact that they are all one color rather than that bright red head of the Turkey Vulture. Nice series of pictures and I am amazed about the Eagle tolerating the vultures. Have a great day!
ReplyDeletei do love these birds but i'd not want them all over my car. :) great shots, eileen! and thanks for the fencery, too!
ReplyDeleteHello Eileen!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!!Wish you all the best!!
Great shots of the Black Vultures! And very interesting to see them all over the area!Have a lovey week!!
Dimi...
Wow, they are big hulking things aren't they?
ReplyDeletekind of like a scene from The Birds, Hitchcock style.. they are great for keeping our world clean, ugly but beautiful.. had no thought about the damage to cars... the tarp is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteHey, I've never seen black vultures up close, only in the small pictures in the field guides. They look just like turkey vultures, but their face is black, not red! I didn't know that. Excellent photos.
ReplyDeleteNice pics of the vultures! Boy those are some ugly birds.
ReplyDeleteHello Eileen
ReplyDeleteVery pleased me your post.
Vultures, white-tailed birds, which I do not see in my country.
Thank you, that I could be with you to watch.
Greetings.
Lucia
Hello Eileen, great photos of black vultures.
ReplyDeleteYou will not be happy when they come on the car.
Very special, here in the Netherlands you will never see this.
Sorry...kind've combined my comments for both posts. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh my, this is a far cry from say Eagles or Hummingbirds, lol. They have their own attractions I guess, but I can't imagine heading to my car to chase one of these away. You got some beautiful shots that is for sure, they sort of look a little like a wild turkey only after I've seen my first one that is only a couple of weeks ago. I saw two peacocks walking along the side of the road they were so beautiful. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteBoa tarde, O abutre é uma ave interessante e muito útil para a conservação do planeta, as fotos foram muito bem obtidas.
ReplyDeleteAG
Great photos of very interesting birds.
ReplyDeleteNeat to see them up close. I imagine they can do a lot of damage with those strong beaks.
ReplyDeleteI like your Black Vulture pictures Eileen. Although with them hanging about like that it looks like some people might throw them food - a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteCan't imagine why they would target rubber windscreen surrounds unless they just get bored waiting around!
Oh my goodness, Eileen, I've never seen black vultures and I have to say, they do kind of live up to their reputation, i.e., somewhat scary!! And those behavioural mysteries don't help, don't they?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing and happy Tuesday!
Poppy
Wowee, a Black Vulture, that are brilliant photos.
ReplyDeleteNice pics, Eileen. I happened to take a picture of some black vultures the other day, too.
ReplyDelete~
We also were given a tarp to cover our car when we parked at Everglades National Park. It is so odd that they suddenly started chewing on the rubber window molding and wipers. Some kind of copy-cat behavior, but what started it?
ReplyDeletePosing, maybe..But they had their backs to you.. :)Not my favorite birds..
ReplyDeleteWow, they really are handsome birds, those black vultures. We only see the turkey vultures around here. Your images are fantastic! And a bonus eagle, too!
ReplyDeleteThose vultures are mean looking birds. I'd not want to get too close.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a meeting of undertakers.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a black vulture. They're a very somber looking bird. We only have turkey vultures here, which I love to watch as they glide by. I don't think I'd be too happy finding a bunch of these guys on my car though! The vultures here are very shy and cautious. Wendy x
ReplyDeleteThey look a bit intimidating.
ReplyDeleteThey probably make a bigger mess on the car than the pigeons. That is a lot of them hanging around.
ReplyDeletewonderful close-ups.....but I would not want one on my car. I am surprised they are soooo tame!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Bald Eagles! It's interesting to see that they don't mind sharing space with the vultures. Our vultures here in MO have red faces and are quite ug...but they serve a good purpose in keeping the land cleaned up!
ReplyDeleteThey are everywhere, we don't have black vultures not sure if we have any vultures, i've never seen any but we do have eagles.
ReplyDeleteMerle................
They looks scary. Maybe I have been reading too many stories books :D
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day :)
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteALOHA from Honolulu

=^..^=
Wow, awesome shots of the Vultures and the Eagles. :-))
ReplyDeleteImpressive birds! I would love to see one! To bad they eat the rubber from the cars, then I would get mad at them.
ReplyDeleteWow...this is a first!!! I'm not so sure I've ever seen vultures on a car before! Eerie.
ReplyDeleteBut...fantastic photos.
The name 'Black Vulture' conjures up all sorts of dark, sombre images of black magic, medieval myths and sorcery! I don't know why - and nor do I know why they chew rubber! Have a great day, my friend!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen vultures ganged up around cars and fences here. They're most often on roadsides and trees. Great pics!
ReplyDeleteCool shots, Eileen. Black vultures are fairly rare here and whenever they are spotted birders flock to see them. So far I have never been on a chase to see one but perhaps I will if one is seen close by!
ReplyDeleteNever heard they like to peck at the rubber on cars. Great shots Eileen.
ReplyDeleteI only knew the turkey vultures that come through the pass here every October by the tens of thousands. I never heard of black vultures before. One reason blogging is so much fun: You always learn something new. Fabulous pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhere I live I see them all the time. They are gigantic size in life alright.
ReplyDeleteGreat takes.
WOW, very impressive!
ReplyDeleteAlthough the feet won't harm the paint, I wouldn't like to see them pick at my car's gum! LOL!
At least one pic would be great to post at Good fences!
Keep well Eileen!
great photos.
ReplyDeleteOlá Eileen, grande ave essa!
ReplyDeleteVocê está rodeada de um mundo fantástico!
Lindas fotos!
Abraços,
Ailime
wow, that is some spectacular shots. Never seen them on the roof of a car :)
ReplyDeleteEeek, scary faces !
ReplyDeleteI was not even aware that there was a black vulture. I have to say that the black makes them a tad more cute than the turkey that I do see here.. Great photos for Nature Notes Eileen..thank you..Michelle
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Vultures are one of my favorites. I've never been that close, though.
ReplyDeleteWow, Eileen, these vultures sure do look creepy---lol! They remind me of the old western movies where the there was always a vulture overhead. You got all wonderful photos of them!
ReplyDeleteOh my! These are rather Poe-ish, I would say! We have turkey vultures here - they are not as 'handsome'. Great shots!
ReplyDeleteWow - great shots.
ReplyDeleteI've seen plenty of vultures before, but never black ones. Very nice photos...
ReplyDeleteHoney!
ReplyDeleteIf you make me look at them again...
:D :D :D

Wow, those vultures look a little spooky! And eagles always look so beautiful to me. I'm sure the vultures' mothers think they're beautiful too.
ReplyDeleteamazing , they sit on the fence for you to photograph them.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a vulture like that - just the turkey vultures that are pretty common here even in the city!
ReplyDeleteSo many vultures!!! AND an Eagle!!! I would have been jumping up and down to see the eagle, but would have been afraid of scaring the vultures!! Great shots!!
ReplyDeleteNature is truly amazing! These are exceptional photos of these birds! I enjoyed seeing them.
ReplyDeleteThey are enormous. Great shots.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures - but I still think I'd find it a bit strange to have vultures on my car!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
Awesome shots Eileen! They don't seem skittish at all. Of course I'm not sure how close you were but even with my long lens the vultures here don't stick around.
ReplyDeleteThose Black Vuufltures look like old time clerks in a courtroom! A quill pen would complete the image!
ReplyDeleteFrom what I was told, eagles frequently fly with vultures...:)JP
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a real live vulture, I expected they might look different from all the photos I've seen of them. Silly really, they still look scarey. I didn't expect they would sit around so quietly..
ReplyDeleteGreat post and wonderful series of images, Eileen!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite birds! Their ability to soar for hours is truly awesome.
Biologists still aren't sure why they pick on vehicles' soft parts. Best guess is they are just curious as they typically spit the stuff out.
Have a good week!
What good-looking birds! Nice shots.
ReplyDeletestriking images
ReplyDeletethey are prettier than of those we see here
blessings!
