Scarlet Tanager

I am linking up with World Bird Wednesday  and Nature Notes

The Scarlet Tanager is my bird this week. Hubby and I hear them often above our heads while we are walking on the fireroads around our house and neighborhood. The Scarlet Tanager is a breeding bird here in Maryland and they are nesting right here at the watershed...the woods surrounding our house.

The male is a gorgeous red with black wings and tail.  They nest in deciduous and mixed woods. The female is an olive with brownish wings. The juvenile male has the coloring like the female but with black wings. Their song is one I recognize each year when they return to my woods. Definitely one of the more colorful birds I see and another one of my favorite summer birds.

Ooooh!! What a stunning bird, absolutely gorgeous! The colour is really beautiful but it must make it rather vulnerable to predators I would think.

Wow Eileen what a kool looking bird. That's native to your area ? Out west we had of course Western Tanangers. The beautiful contrast of bright colours against an ocean of green is a pleasent change.

What a gorgeous bird, Eileen. I've never seen one. Is the female the same color --or like most female birds, more of a brown color?

Thanks for sharing. Great pictures.
Hugs,
Betsy

Magnificent coloring on that beautiful bird and it contrasts so well with the green of the foliage.

Your scarlet tanager bird is so pretty, and you always found amazing ones to share..

I'm stalking the blue jay these last two days :-)

Beautiful! Nice that you get to see them often. They are pretty rare here. Only flying through for a day or two.

I am also in Maryland! I rarely see the scarlet tanager here on our acres. None spied this year but have seen fleetingly in past summers.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Fantastic shots of the beautiful bird.

Lovely pics, Eileen! They are so hard to photograph since they usually hide in the foliage high in the trees.

I loved to see the Tanagers when I visited CostaRica. I wish we had them where I live.

Hi Eileen! I would have pegged that as a tropical bird, for sure - not something that you would find in Maryland! Amazing! You got really, really good photos of it too :) I really appreciate you sharing this with us!!

Such beautiful shots, Eileen! Is that a new header? It is lovely!

What a beautiful bird! As colorful as they are they're easy to see up in the tree branches. We have so many little brown jobs here that seem to blend right in.

You are so lucky!!!! Tanagers are fascinating....they come in all colors and appear in our hot and humid summers. And they can be very tricky to capture on film as they like to perch high up into the trees. I spotted the Summer Tanager here in a canyon...yet another lovely shade of red/orange. There's a blue one I saw in Panama.....wow!!!

We don't get to see this here. You got great captures.
