Northern Cardinal

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

This week I enjoyed watching the juvenile Cardinal begging for food from its Momma. The juveniles look so cute.

For some reason the adult female Cardinal look like she is wearing lipstick.

Please Momma FEED ME. Poor Momma is probably looking for help from Daddy Cardinal . And  Daddy is just too busy off chasing other cardinals out of his yard.

I think shot is especially cute, the look on Momma Cardinal. I think she is saying baby you are growing up so fast. Time to start feeding yourself.  I hope you enjoy my Cardinal as much as I do.

Oh that was so cute Eileen....daddy's off to work protecting the territory while mom takes care of feeding and teaching the kid! The expressions on her face and the way she's tilting her head ...just priceless. (Added bonus to me is that I've never seen an immature cardinal....we don't have them at all here in Oregon nor near our yard in Florida.

Excellent shots! We had a cardinal nest in the backyard last year, but I didn't see one this year.

Cardinals are so expressive. This weekend I posted one on Facebook that I titled "bad feather day". Boy was he a mess--looked half plucked. This baby's days to be momma fed are numbered, I think! Great photo journal, Eileen.

I really enjoyed your photos of Mama and Baby Cardinal. We enjoy seeing the fledglings being taken care of by Mom and Dad at our feeders as well.

brilliant captures. We have quite a few cardinals near us but I had to stop putting feed out for them because of the darn grackles.

That is the first time I've seen a Mama Cardinal feed the babies.... It's usually always the Daddy.... Hope something didn't happen to the Daddy...

Cute little one!!!

Charming photos - and I agree - mama is sad that baby is growing up - but wanting baby to begin taking care of herself - great expression!!

Maybe Momma is just topping up because as you say Eileen, that little one looks ready to fend for itself. Lovely pictures. Enjoy the rest of your week's birding.

I often marvel at the patience and wisdom of adult birds at this time of year. They have to slowly cut off the food supply so the juveniles will mature as they must, but at the same time, receive enough nourishment to have strength to develop hunting skills. Fun and interesting post.

Hi Eileen, Every one of the Northern Cardinals I have noticed with offspring, have been exceptionally tender parents. Yes, lipstick is a great description for the bill of that little lady! Have a super nice Thursday tomorrow!

They are not the best looking birds when they are not dressed in full plumage! But they do look like characters!

Love these little ones as well. I've been adding piles of wood behind our fence and this year they raised their first brood...and it was awesome! Glad you have them around and can enjoy their demanding nature. If I didn't put the safflower seed out for them, they would stare at me from outside into my dining room window. Quite humorous!

I definitely enjoy your cardinals Eileen. It is so fun watching the Moms trying to rid themselves of their grown-up babies who just don't want to leave :)
