Snow Geese..Bird photography weekly 64

I am combining my entries for memes this post will include Scenic Sunday and  Bird photography weekly # 64. I think seeing close to 80,000 Snow geese is a wonderful scene.

If you click on all the pictures you can really see the birds.

I have been lucky to be at several places when the Snow Geese arrive. There are various places to see them and some are not too far away. To the north of  where I live is the Middle Creek WMA and the other places are Bombay Hook NWR and Chincoteague NWR.

I can say I have never seen so many of one type of bird (except for the RedKnots) at one time. The sound of so many Snow Geese is amazing. To see them flying in large groups at a time is an awesome sight to see. It is a like a snowstorm or what they call a white-out. You really have to be there to experience this sighting. Last year a count of the Snow Geese at the Middle Creek WMA was near 80,000. My photos are great for my memories but they are not as good as the real thing.

These Snow Geese photos  were taken last March and at different times and at two of these places.. Middle Creek and Bombay Hook.

You can go and see more great birds and other animals at The Ark

Thanks to our host of Scenic Sunday and to see more great scenery go and visit

Lake Mattamuskeet in eastern NC has a great many waterfowl during the winter, but I haven't been there in years. Your pictures are wonderful!

It must have been an amazing experience, I can't even imagine the sound. I have seen very large gatherings of Canada geese but nothing on this scale. Great photos.

Great photograph and I should think a great experience. My hubby and I were in Dorset in the Summer at the Abbotsbury Swannery and that was an amazing sight to see all the swans together there!!

A truly magical experience. I just love watching large flocks of anything and hopefully next week it will be 60,000+ Pink-footed Geese. FAB

Oh I am glad to see the Snow Geese. Skagit Valley here is a winter over place for them too. I sighted them October 11th here this year. they are in Stanwood and Fir Island. Last year the count was 100,000. How can you count these flighty guys. I love to see them fly and when they are high in the sky they look like ribbons. MB

You have really captured the feeling here Eileen. When you get into an area that has that many birds, especially large birds, and they take flight like that, calling loudly to one another, it really is exciting. The sounds those huge flocks make are incredible to hear as you watch them fly.

Amazing photos and it must have been even better to experience seeing all those birds together.

Amazing, I cant even imagine how much cooler it was to be there, and see and hear them.

Eileen - beautiful pictures, just beautiful. If you ever go to New Mexico in the Fall,Bosque del Apache is a wonderful place to see the snow geese flights. And sandhill cranes. I have a link to our dig. photo album on the top of our blog.
It is amazing to see so many. One oldler person there told me that when he was young, the sky used to get as dark as night because there would be so many birds flying overhead. It was almost like that -- almost -- when we were there.

Thank you for sharing.

Don't think I would like to be one of the counters with that many, just imagine the amount of food and water they would need.
