Great Blue Heron on Ice

During our Blackwater NWR visit we watched a Great Blue Heron walking on the ice. I guess this Heron didn't make the trip south and decided to stay at Blackwater. On this day the temp's were in the high 50's and even close to 60. So the ice was melting and the heron could still find food along the waters edge. It just seemed odd to see one walking on the ice.

He does look odd walking on the ice. I'll bet he's wondering if his decision to not fly south was a wise one!

Amazing, Eileen, I never knew that either. Will he survive the winter, do you think?

He is very handsome, great photos. Maybe he heard it was cold down south too.

This Heron woke up late for the trip. And now it wake up too early for the food.

That was different, seeing a blue heron walking on ice.
I have yet to capture one in a photo as they like to visit our pond in the backyard but always seem to hear me open the screen door.

He looks quite healthy, despite being in the wrong place. I posted a heron shot last week. We don't see that many in NZ, although we do have them.

He looks kinda sad. :( Poor buddy!

Any bird walking on ice looks pretty strange to a birder that lives in the sub-tropics :-)

I get jealous sometimes when I see birds or other small animals walking on ice so effortlessly. :)

Wow Eileen, how weird is that? I have yet to see a Great Blue ice skating. Amazing! Great shots of the phenomenon.

Excellent capture, Eileen! Good thing the ice is still strong enough to carry the weight of the Great Blue.

Great shots of the great blue. I didn't know they stuck around in icy places.

Wonderful shots of the great blue heron. I love this bird. I also like the shots of the cedar wawing in the post after this. I occasionally have them in my garden and they are so destinctive. All of these are wonderful shots but those two birds are a highlight for me.
