SWF>>Columbia River

I am linking up with Skywatch Friday and Green Day

I still have lots of images from my vacation in Oregon, On this day we were still hanging and traveling around the Columbia River Gorge area.  There were more birds to be found and more waterfalls to see and we did manage to see somewhat of a pretty sunset on the Columbia River.

We took a hike to see the Bridal Veil Falls near the old Scenic Highway. The green moss and ferns are pretty along the cliff of the waterfall. Birds seen and heard here were the Swainson's Thrush, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Cedar Waxwings and some Crows. I was also hearing Nuthatches but they were hiding in the treetops and teasing me.

Except for the size I find it hard to tell a Crow from the larger sized Raven. I believe the beak is a little different too.

A family of common mergansers were seen near the fish hatchery.

When we are on vacation we are constantly moving around beside stopping along the gorge we drove around the loop of Mt Hood to Timothy Lake. Here I also saw and heard more Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Nuthatches and more Thrushes.

I like the various shades of color left in the sky after the sun had set. I hope you enjoyed my photos. I have the Columbia coastline coming up next.  Thanks for stopping by to see my skywatch post.

To see more beautiful skies from around the world check out : Skywatch Friday  and more Greenery is seen at Green Day. Thanks Sylvia and Sandy the host of Skywatch Friday and to Fiona the host of Green Day.

I do love those shots of the sunset! The colors always amaze me - and the changes are sometimes so rapid that you miss them if you blink! Love that shot of crow/raven...I never know the difference anyway! Have a great day (I slept in until 5am - WOW!)

I love hidden slot canyons where green mosses, ferns and other lush plants find a hidden niche within the microclimate environs of a secret waterfall, especially when found in the desert. Beautiful photos as always.

The waterfall with mosses reminded me a bit of Zion National Park in Utah.

It sure is a beautiful area. Love the waterfall and the sun with a cloud floating in front. Stunning.

Great series Eileen. If you don't hear the classic raven call, another way to tell is in flight watching their tail. Ravens have a more curved tail arc, crows are more square

nice waterfall.
It is easier, I think, to tell tte difference between black crow and raven in flight. Their siluette differs.

Lovely Eileen! I've seen a whole bunch of different ways to tell crows and ravens apart and I still never know -- not sure if anybody does.

SquirrelQueen said...

That sunset is gorgeous. Isn't the Columbia gorge a wonderful place? You were about 3 hours west of me when you were there.

Ravens are about 3-4 times larger than crows, they are huge. The also have a curved bill with a little tuft of hair at the top, crows don't have that. When I lived in Anchorage the ravens were everywhere, I got to see them often and close. There are few things more unnerving than returning to your car in a quiet parking lot and suddenly hearing that loud caw right above your head on the light pole.

Morning Eileen,

I hope that all is well with you.

Thanks so much for linking up again with Green Day

I am sorry that I have not been around for the last week or so
but I have my Mum staying with me at the moment and feel guilty
if I don't give her my time and so haven't been on the computer much.

I will have so much catching up to do
when Mum goes home that it will take me until Christmas
to get through all the posts I have missed!

Have a lovely weekend.

x Fiona
