Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes
For this week's wild bird I am sharing the American White Pelican.. It is one of North America's largest birds. The Pelicans remind me of a prehistoric bird.
A view of the Pelican's white and black wings..
Both the White and Brown Pelicans are another one of my favorite birds..Groups of Pelicans have been known to work together to herd fish..
A side look at the Pelican's pouch. They use the pouch to scoop up fish..
We saw a lot of White Pelicans during our Outer Banks, NC visit. But, the Brown Pelicans out numbered most of the birds we saw.. In the Outer Banks there is a place called Pelican Island. A known Brown Pelican rookery that began in the 1980's. Between 500-1500 Brown Pelican fledglings can emerge from this rookery.
Another view of the Pelican's huge wing span.. I hope you enjoyed my Pelican post.. Till next week's wild bird post.. I wish you happy Birding and have a wonderful week!

Hi Eileen, thanks for stopping by my blog. I have a granddaughter 22 in January.
ReplyDeleteI looked your post. Pelicans are a favorite. Dianne
Enjoyed the photos of the pelicans; they remind me of a few years back when we had a lot of them at Pine Lake State Park.
ReplyDeleteUnusual bird, isn't it? I love to see them flying along a beach.
ReplyDeleteThis definitely a very cool bird. It's making a comeback in many parts of our country and that's encouraging. Wonderful sightings and what a beautiful area!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen a pelican 'in person.' What a beautiful and interesting bird!
ReplyDeletesuch cool birds, indeed!
ReplyDeleteThey are a goofy cumbersome looking bird.

ReplyDeleteohhh they are just sooo cool looking!!!!
ReplyDeleteMajestic birds and wonderful photos.
ReplyDeleteI adore the pelicans - we had the white ones in N. California and they have them in Seattle - just 90 miles south of here - but none up here - I can't figure that out. I loved to see them flying low over the water. Your photos are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteOlá Eileeen, fotos fantásticas!
ReplyDeleteNão conhecia esse pelicano!
Há muitos anos vi alguns em Portugal, mas na verdade são mais pequenos e enocntram-se em charcos!
Belas capturas!
Abraços,
Ailime
Beautiful bird !
ReplyDeleteThe pelican is such a pretty bird.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pelican shots!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen a pelican in 20 years!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing yours.
Love your birds..great pictures..
ReplyDeletethe pelicans bill looks very red in the side/back light :) Cool!
ReplyDeletewhishing you a great week.
Great photos! The deep blue water is beautiful with the white pelicans!
ReplyDeleteWow, they have some pretty big beaks!!
ReplyDeleteNICE photos.
They are so amazing! I still can't believe we saw so many of them in Oregon ... that was totally unexpected.
ReplyDeleteWe see more of the brown ones here in Florida -- only occasionally the whites. I always think the brown ones are like clowns, while the white ones are more graceful. And you are right, both seem rather prehistoric.
Pelicans are such interesting birds.
ReplyDeleteFantastic shots of the pelicans.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning photos of these lovely pelicans!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun hanging with you and your fascinating friends, E

Hi There, I always enjoy your blog posts --and today's post about the White Pelicans is great. We take pelicans for granted sometimes, don't we? I think the white ones are so much prettier than the brown ones --but they really are gorgeous birds, all of them. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
They look like jetliners!
ReplyDelete~
They really do look prehistoric. I think I spy a swan in the photos, too.
ReplyDeletePelicans are amazing birds! Nice shots, Eileen. I think they look prehistoric as well. Thanks for all your kind comments on my blog! I am glad you had fun on the outer banks!
ReplyDeleteHello Eileen.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful series of images of the pelican.
With the blue waters are my favorite.
Very nice photos of the pelican. I believe I've only seen them once and that was in Kenya! I took a lot of photos :-)
ReplyDeletei always love seeing your birds, eileen! gorgeous shots of the pelicans.
ReplyDeletebig hugs~
They look prehistoric to me too. I really NEED to travel to North Carolina to see these fascinating birds!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! Pelican are so pretty, I didn't know they had a little black under their wings.
ReplyDeletePretty!!! What a difference a day makes, tho...some on dark gray water, while on another day the blue water is intense.
ReplyDeleteThey look gorgeous! I like the lonely one in blue water. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat great photos! I love pelicans as well. They are such interesting birds. So glad to visit you again today and wish you a Merry Christmas! :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of these huge birds. Have a great week, Eileen.
ReplyDeletePelicans are such interesting birds, and wonderful to watch in the air especially. I enjoyed this post.
ReplyDeleteI love pelicans too, they are such a strange looking bird. I didn't know there were brown and white ones. We've only got 'white' ones I think.
ReplyDeleteThey've always looked prehistoric to me, too.
ReplyDeleteI love how they look as though they shouldn't be able to take off and fly with those huge bills.... Michelle
ReplyDeleteEver since seeing one on Flipper (many years ago), I've wanted to see a pelican for myself. Your photos are as close as I will probably get and they are awesome!
ReplyDeleteDearest Eileen; How impressive seeing pelicans we have in my city park and know they work together to herd fish♡♡♡ Yes, huge wing span they have, don't they(*^_^*)
ReplyDeleteSending Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan to my Dear friend in America, xoxo Miyako*

ReplyDeleteI really like pelicans - they are so big!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
Pelicans do look a tad prehistoric don't they? But they are oh so graceful in flight.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Pelicans! Our Aussie ones are Black AND White so it's a bit strange to see a pure white one, but other than that they look very similar! Have a great week!
