Saturday's Critters # 362

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

I wanted to share some more of the Bald Eagles we saw at the Conowingo Dam and Susquehanna River.  I mentioned in a previous post, the Bald Eagles  congregate in this area during their migration in the winter.

1. People come from all over to see and photograph the Bald Eagles.  I am not sure if it is happening this year due to Covid cancellations, but they have had Bald Eagle photo contest and an event called Eagle Day. There are 3 Eagles in the photo below.

Click on the photos for better viewing.

2. There is a rocky area below the dam, where the Bald Eagles like to sit.  Two adult Bald Eagles are seen below.

3. Both the juvenile and Bald Eagles are seen along with some Black Vultures.

4. I took photos maybe every 6 feet, more adult and juvenile Bald Eagles sitting on the rocks. Sometimes all I could see was a head or their wings.  But, there is at least 7 Eagles in the photos below.

You really have to click on this photo to count all the eagles.

5. It is fun to watch these eagles, flying around chasing each other.  At times it was like a few juveniles had fun playing a game of tag.

6. Bald Eagle in a tree above the parking lot.

7.  The Great Blue Herons  have a rookery at this same spot.  As long as the river does not freeze, the herons may stay year round.  Two Great Blue Herons sitting in this tree.

I would say there could have been 40-50 Bald Eagles, maybe more on this day, there is an island in the middle of the river blocking some of the view.

Thanks to all my visitors and for all the wonderful comments. Stop back to see any replies to your comments. I appreciate everyone who loves critters and has linked up their critter post.

Hi Eileen,
Nice series of photos of the bald eagle.
Great to be able to see this in nature, but a few couples come here all over the Netherlands, they have really been away from here for years, now since a few years 1 couple has returned and they have given birth to a few young.
If you want to post my link, I cannot do that myself.
Have a great weekend and stay healthy.

I had a blank... so had to look it up... "The word for eagle nest, aerie, is the word for a group of eagles. Convocation is another collective noun for eagles." I appreciate the thrill this must have been to witness directly! YAM xx

Wow, more eagles than I have ever seen in one place!. I was surprised to learn that the Bald Eagles of south Florida migrate the opposite way, flying north in summer and returning south in winter. This tendency is especially strong in juveniles and other immatures which are not as skilled hunters as adults. The fish favor colder water, which is richer in oxygen than the warm water, so they tend to stay deep during Florida's summer, making them more difficult to catch. Just as the northern eagle population flies south to find fish in open water not covered with ice, the southerners fly north to find them nearer the surface. Many of them join in places like Chesapeake Bay, up in your bailiwick. One immature eagle from nearby Palm Beach County was tracked up into Maine and may have ventured into Canada before returning home. Our adult eagles tend to move only locally and supplement their diet with abundant waterfowl and also guard their territories against critters such as Great Horned Owls and Ospreys which may try to possess their nest.

this would really have been something I would LOVE to see. Amazing! In my area we have sea eagles, not the same as yours. At most I have seen 4 in the air. Parents and juveniles. :) But this year I have only seen two.
Thanks for sharing the beauties :)

They are magnificent, wonderful creatures and merit all the protection, respect and admiration we can give them. It is hard to believe that not so long ago people were paid a bounty to kill them. How can you declare a bird a national symbol and then pay people to go out and kill it? It always strikes me as ironic, and very, very sad, that the Grizzly Bear is on California's state flag, yet every one of them was systematically exterminated.

Lovely photos. I actually saw a bald eagle only once in my life at a state park I worked years ago. It was a pretty amazing sighting for me.

Linda said...

How wonderful! I actually saw a bald eagle today, while I was driving near Elizabeth Furnace. There was no spot to pull over so I slowed down and saw the eagle land on a branch about 20 feet over my head! The car behind me slowed down too, so I guess we were both blessed by this sight! It was a gorgeous bird.

I drive there fairly often so maybe I'll see it again.
