Great Blue Heron on Ice

During our Blackwater NWR visit we watched a Great Blue Heron walking on the ice. I guess this Heron didn't make the trip south and decided to stay at Blackwater. On this day the temp's were in the high 50's and even close to 60. So the ice was melting and the heron could still find food along the waters edge. It just seemed odd to see one walking on the ice.

  3. He does look odd walking on the ice. I'll bet he's wondering if his decision to not fly south was a wise one!

  33. Wonderful shots of the great blue heron. I love this bird. I also like the shots of the cedar wawing in the post after this. I occasionally have them in my garden and they are so destinctive. All of these are wonderful shots but those two birds are a highlight for me.
