Painted Bunting

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

For this week's featured bird I am sharing my favorite the Painted Bunting. We saw maybe 5-6 males and females at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary during our visit to Florida.

I actually saw the Painted Bunting in Maryland and at that time it was a lifer for me.  Their vivid colors of blue, red, green and yellow are very attractive.

They are medium sized finches with thick seed eating bills.

The females and immature males are a bright yellow-green and a pale eye-ring.

For the longest time, this bird was on my top ten most want to see list. I loved seeing these beautiful males during my vacation to Florida. The Painted Bunting will always be one of my favorite birds.

Thanks for stopping by and for leaving your nice comments. I always appreciate your visits.

  1. An American friend of mine set me some colouring books (although I suppose that they were coloring books!) when H was born - one of them had this bird in it - I thought it was made up at the time!!

    I'd love to see one!

  16. Eileen, it is so awesome that you were able to photograph this bird. It is on my wish list, too. I was so sad that they came through here and I never saw one. I kept seeing reports, but this beauty eluded me and now they're gone. Wonderful shots! Congrats.

Yes, it was goldeneye ducklings I had taken pictures of. I'm forgetting that the translator doesn't "understand" everything. I have now changed a bit and put in some links and written the latine name for my birds too. :)

  41. That Painted Bunting is a real treasure! What a special bird, Eileen. We have Reed Buntings ... LBJs with distinctive black heads. Your buntings are like a splash of rainbow!

  42. It sure is a beautiful bird. His beak looks like it would do a good job on cracking open seeds and maybe a finger. I thought of you often on my recent trip into the tropics where I saw many different birds but unfortunately I'm not quick enough to capture them with my camera.
